Made-really-well- fashion a la mode

Okay- can I please brag for just a second? One of my best friends, Jordan, recently just got a fantastic opportunity to intern with Madewell. Madewell is the clothing brand owned by J. Crew.  Jordan’s new job allows her to promote the brand on her campus (Madison, WI), and brainstorm for cool events! Since she told me about this, I figured I had to pay some respect to a company that is keeping us all fashionably clothed.

Madewell was started in 1937 as a workwear company. Today, more than 70 years later, they are far more than just the modest company they started as. This company houses modern clothing that have a downtown flair with homage to the past. Just like J.Crew, the clothes are classy, chic and cool. Madewell claims that if they were a person, they would be your best friend and stylist, wrapped up into one.

Yes, yes, we know its still so cold out, but all the new spring clothes have us dreaming of the sun, and those aren’t bad dreams, are they?

P.S. Madewell and J. Crew both offer discounts for students. Flash that student id and you can get up to 15% off of your purchase. Now, you can go shop, guilt free.

Don't Bother Me- music a la mode

Ever put on your headphones so people get the hint that your busy?  Whether it is letting yourself get lost in thought or trying to finish that paper in time, sometimes we all need to escape people and distractions.  We fell in love with these vintage earphones that are now being sold in stores.  Check out www.flyinganyc.com. Headphones for only $25. Now isn't that a fun thing.

Feeling pensive today?  Download Timshel by Mumford & Sons and get lost in the music.  In style.

Decoded: translated, reviewed, interpreted- entertainment a la mode

"America don't understand it, the demographics I tapped in"
I sit down to write this book review on Shawn Carter's new autobiography, Decoded, I am listening to his music and find myself drifting in and out of focusing. Between the graphic and honest lyrics of his songs, and the beats that are bumping through the space of my speakers, I keep closing my eyes and listening instead of doing what I have set out to do... write this review. 99 problems, and writing is one.
Who is Shawn Carter? Come on avid hip-hoppers! Jay-Z... does that name ring a bell? If it doesn't, you should probably just cut your losses and quit reading now.
"Young, Gifted and Black"
Decoded, which was released in November, is Jay-Z's attempt to show us that rap and hip-hop can be considered legitimate forms of poetry, and therefore art. We are also given explanations to all of those lyrics we may have been a bit confused with. A lot of people showed concern with the fact that the normal very private Jay, would lose that in this new book. This is untrue. He remains true to his private life, but giving a glimpse at how he rose to be "one of the most provocative and successful artists of our time".
I received this book for Christmas from my cousin- a surprising but thoughtful gift. I had read reviews about it before getting the gift, and when I opened it I was very excited to see the gold shimmery cover of the book. I poured into it right away and still, almost a month later, am finding new lyrics and listening to the songs that coincide.
This memoir is much more than just an autobiography about this hip-hop mogul. Yes, he takes us back to his roots in Brooklyn, New York, and his rise from the projects and the life of a drug dealer. He then brings us on his journey to free-styling in Trenton, New Jersey, to where he first heard the great music of the Sugar Hill Gang and Run DMC. We continue to follow him through his rise to the top, where he became, and still is today, one of the biggest idols in the hip-hop world. This is much more than a memoir however, in that it is a deeply personal set of entries which are very close to his heart and which shows us how highly he thinks of his predecessors and the art that is, hip-hop music. It is all in all, a brilliant book and has sold far more copies than anyone gave him credit for. And trust me, he makes "no apologies for what he's about to do".

Oh and by the way, in the song "Big Pimpin'", the phrase B.L.A.D's refers to rims on cars. Something, for years I sang without knowing the definition. Boy am I glad its just that.

When he can't beat the odds, can't cheat the cards/Can't blow too hard, life's a deck of cards/Now you're tumbling, it's humbling, you're falling, you're mumbling/Under your breath like you knew this day was coming/(FALLING)

Uhh,uh uh uh/It's big pimpin baby...

An Ode to the 90's- fashion a la mode

Our friend Carrie recently shared her new inspiration with us: Brenda Walsh's killer jeans on the show 90210.  We decided that the lifespan of high-waisted jeans was not over.  So don't be shy, pair some boy-cut wranglers with a crop top or fun sneakers, and you might be just as convinced as we are.

The World's Biggest Question- fashion a la mode

We are sitting here trying to answer some of the world's biggest questions. For example: what is life? Easy answer- life is what we are doing right now. However, there is one question we cannot seem to find the answer to.
What happens to socks? This may seem like a joke, but we are seriously asking this question. You can put 4 socks in the washing machine to find only 3 come out. (Apparently, there is a part of a washing machine called an agitator that socks can easily get lost in, but this is beside the point.) You pull out socks of your drawer, after pairing them, and you always seem to get just one. After a while, some people just give up and use these single socks to do things such as dusting the house, or making them into toys for their dogs. It has become a common thing to just wear mismatched socks- they are under our fabulous shoes so who cares...
But what if we want our socks to show? This winter it has become a common thing to see women wearing their trendy leather boots, with some high socks sticking out the top. These girls must never lose their socks.
(J. Crew)
Socks sticking out of boots, socks sticking out over the edges of Mary Janes and moccasins; there are socks popping up everywhere. There is a small solution to wearing this trend and not pulling out your hair trying to find two long socks of the same pair. Some boot companies have come out with boots with built in socks. These socks either clip in at the top, or are sewn throughout the boot.
(Hunter)
Hunter does a great job making boots that are easy to throw on in the morning before class without having to try and find socks at all. So maybe, for now, we can't answer for sure what happens to all of our designer Hanes socks, but we can breathe easily knowing that for some of us, the option to wear this trend is out there. And for those of you who have never lost socks, or have a sock fairy that matches all of your pairs perfectly, please share your secrets. How do you do it?

Over and out.

Thursday*a la mode

We meant to write our first post on a Wednesday, but our scatterbrained nature did not allow it.  So now its Thursday, and we are sending our first official greeting from the frozen tundra, aka Minnesota.  I bet you're excited to know what this blog is about, HEY- so are we.  'Burr' with us and come back to us.  Please?
